Microsoft Office coming to iPad ‘within weeks’

This post first appeared on the LINE blog on 13th March 2012.

The widely supported and popular Microsoft Office tools are coming to the iPad, further boosting the popular tablet device’s impact across businesses. Already the must-have tech device in the office, the iPad will now allow native editing and creation of Office documents.

This means that users can go beyond reviewing desktop-based colleagues’ Office docs in viewers and using a suite of second-rate experience third-party apps on the device. Soon they will be able to review, edit and create native Office files themselves.

Popular tech blog, The Daily, got an early look at the Microsoft Office suite on the iPad. The three Office tools included in the demo they saw, Word, Excel and Powerpoint, all worked perfectly well with the touch interface of the iPad. Office for iPad is expected to be released to the Apple App Store ‘within weeks’.

Update: Microsoft themselves have commented on the original story. Commenting that clarity will arrive in “the coming weeks”. Meanwhile, iPad users eager to utilise the latent power of the iPad, combined with Microsoft’s Office suite, eagerly await further news.
